Supporting Landscape and NRM boards to Navigate Complexity

What Challenges do Landscape Boards Face Today?

Landscape and Natural Resource Management Boards have been striving for many years to nurture and care for this country upon which we all rely for our lives and livelihoods. It is a challenging task, made all the more complex in recent years.

Climate change is manifesting in myriad ways. Since 2019, South Australia has experienced at least three devastating bushfires, a global pandemic, a major river flood, more fires, a drought and an unprecedented algal bloom. Biodiversity is becoming more fragile as crucial species become extinct. Farmers are struggling to make ends meet.

There is unprecedented strain in our communities as our young people experience climate anxiety, and the need to adapt is urgent. With the publication of more climate modelling from specialists like James Hansen, the prospect of +2°C sometime in the 2030s is no longer out of bounds. The more we learn, the more dire our problematique appears. Developing an ability to adapt is not only important, but urgent. The collective challenge is now generally accepted to be regeneration on a bioregional basis.

How Can We Achieve Regeneration?

One significant problem that is often not even recognised is the way that we plan using processes inherited from mechanistic management habits. Plans that are linear, relying upon prediction in an increasingly uncertain world. Additionally, consultation processes that draw out ideas from communities without dealing with the biases against change that we all express.

These approaches may have worked in times gone by when the economic and climatic conditions were more stable, but they are doomed to fail in complex and unpredictable environments.

Her deep understanding of complexity...and exceptional coaching skills, have allowed our team to test ideas and become confident navigators in complexity.

Josie’s coaching has profoundly shaped the way I think, respond and practice in all my professional and personal roles. Her curious, relatable questioning allows me to reflect more deeply, it gives space for what I know to be true and she challenges me to experiment and keep on learning and learning again!

For all those practicing in complex systems and seeking to adapt and regenerate, having a coach like Josie to walk alongside you is invaluable.
— Christy Spier, Team Leader Nature Education Green Adelaide
Josie worked with me and my leadership team at Flinders University across multiple years, supporting a strategic uplift in leadership capability. Josie’s work focused on both team dynamics and individual development, and she brought a thoughtful, evidence-based approach to every engagement. Josie was highly collaborative, responsive to feedback, and deeply professional in her interactions with me and the team.

Josie’s ability to build trust and challenge constructively made her an invaluable partner in our transformation journey. I strongly endorse Josie for any role requiring leadership development, strategic facilitation, or cultural change within a complex organisation.
— Luke Havelberg, Executive Director, KidSafe Connect Transformation Program
I am deeply fortunate to have worked with Josie both through the Governor’s Leadership Foundation and then as an executive coach. I actively sought Josie out for coaching following our time together in the GLF.

Josie’s organisational development skillset is formidable. Her approach to systems is evidence-based while also being grounded in warmth, deep empathy and a value set that resonates with my own. As a coach, Josie doesn’t give answers; rather, she’ll nurture your own capacity to make links, solve problems and reinvigorate your work.
